During Christmas, the birth of Jesus is usually read throughout Churches, homes, and Christmas plays around the world. We love to read about Jesus, our Savior, born in a manger and wrapped in swaddling clothes, while the wise men follow the star to worship Jesus.
However, we forget about the events that occur right after the birth of Jesus.
Matthew 2:13-15 says, “Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Right after Jesus is born and the wise men come worship Him, Joseph is instructed by an angel of the Lord to flee to Egypt for safety because Herod wanted to kill him. In other words, right after Jesus is born, He becomes an Immigrant (A person who goes to another country for short or long-term stay).
The Christmas story is about an Immigrant. Therefore, while we fellowship with family and friends, enjoy food and cookies by the fire, watch Christmas movies, and open presents on Christmas, remember we celebrate a Savior who was an Immigrant.
