Today, the House Education Administration and Planning Sub-Committee voted to advance HB2429, a bill to grant in-state tuition to all students who spend at least three years in a Tennessee high school, regardless of their immigration status.

The bill is sponsored by Representative Mark White (R-Memphis) and Senator Todd Gardenhire (R-Chattanooga) who have been advocating for fair tuition for the past several years.

Currently, 25,000 plus undocumented students must pay more than three times as much as their classmates to attend a public college or university, no matter how long they’ve lived in Tennessee.

As Christians and people of good will, the Bible doesn’t tell us which specific policy proposals should pass or which policies should be approved for state government–but the Bible does tell us to execute justice for the fatherless and the widow, and love the Immigrant, giving him food and clothing.

Deuteronomy 10:18 says, “He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.”

The advancement of this bill is both executing justice and loving the 25,000 undocumented youth. Let’s continue to pray for the Bill to continue advancing!
