Earlier this week, a 1.3 trillion spending bill was proposed that includes $1.57 billion for construction of physical barriers on the border with Mexico and other security measures. As someone who doesn’t wave the Republican or Democratic flag, and who is theologically conservative and socially compassionate as God’s Word clearly calls us to be, money to protect the border is good news. I believe we need protection in some parts of the border, and definitely need protection at ports of entry.
However, within the Omnibus spending bill, there’s nothing that protects 1.8 million Dreamers and DACA recipients who came to the U.S. as young children without any choice in the matter. This is pathetic. Ridiculous. Does this mean Congress care more about a border with no soul than 1.8 million people who have a heart, soul, and mind?
Congress had six months to pass a bipartisan solution that secures the border and more importantly protects Dreamers and DACA Recipients because of crimes they didn’t commit. This didn’t happen.
Earlier today when I was on Twitter, I came across President Trump’s Tweet below:
I celebrated the President for saying this because Dreamers and DACA recipients have been abandoned by both the Republican and Democratic Party. With this Tweet, I hoped that later today President Trump would veto and urge Congress to add measurements to the bill in order for Dreamers and DACA recipients to stay in the U.S., earn legalized status, and pursue their dreams, but I just received a notification from my phone that President Trump will sign the Omnibus Spending Bill.
With the Spending Bill not including anything for Dreamers and DACA Recipients, each month that passes means thousands will lose their protective status for crimes they didn’t commit.
We press on and continue to advocate, but this is sad.
